Platelet Rich Plasma in Aesthetics

Microneedling using Platelet Rich Plasma

By: Julie Pistorio MS, BSN RN

Microneedling has been a tool for facial resurfacing for a few years. It was not until the popularity of Kim Kardashian and her " Vampire Facial" that the public started to take notice of this amazing technology. Microneedling is a process in which a medical provider uses a needling pen to quickly put pinpoint needles into the surface of the skin. The pen works so quickly that patients are often not aware of how many pinpoint injections are done during each treatment. The purpose of these little needles is to stimulate an immune response from the body. The body then sends collagen and elastin to the treated area which enhances the foundation and strength of the tissue treated. This results in improved skin tone, elasticity, color and texture. Often patients see results after the first treatment but most providers reccomend at least 3 treatments over 4-5 months to maximize results.

Using Platelet Rich Plasma

In our practice, we are proud to offer Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP. PRP is the use of the patients own platelets to heal and promote tissue rejuvenation. It is a great strategy to use the bodies own repairative powers to promote and stimulate new cell growth. Patients that use PRP see better results from thier microneedling procedure because the body is familiar with how to use platelets to heal tissue. Platelets are drawn from a single vial of blood in our office. They are then spun down to weed out the platelets from the red cells. We then use the platelets in its own plasma to topically apply to the microneedled skin. Redness and inflamation are decreased because platelets are better able to promote healing and cell turn over than any topical product that we can provide. For patients that are uncomfortable with using thier own blood, we do offer medical grade alternatives like cytokines and hyaluronic acid. Both of these topical skin care treatments will enhance the results of the microneedling treatment.

What can I expect to see after a treatment?

Patients who have a microneedling procedure at Capital Women's Care can expect redness and inflammation of the treated skin for 24-48 hours. This redness can be covered by makeup ,however, most patients have treatments done on days that they are not required to look thier best! The redness calms and over the course of the next few weeks the body is healing the tissue. Patients report smoother, brighter, tighter and more uniform skin. Its a great treatment for sun damaged skin with discoloration and changes in texture. Pore sizes decrease and the skin texture becomes smooth. We can also use microneedling and PRP over scar tissue, acne scars, surgical scars and c-section scars.
